Sukiyaki (“I Look Up When I Walk”, with lyrics)
Kyu Sakamoto (Hisashi Oshima) was born on November 10, 1941 in Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture), Japan.
Ue o Muite Aruko (I Look Up When I Walk) was released in Japan in 1961.
The music was composed by Hachidai Nakamura.
The lyrics written by Rokusuke Ei, is said to have written this after his heart was broken by the actress, Meiko Nakamura.
It was released in the United States in 1963 and became an International hit. To date, this is the only song that has made it to #1 in the U.S. by a Japanese Singer.
Louis Benjamin, the head of the UK's Pye Records, heard the song while visiting Japan. He brought a copy home and had Kenny Ball & the Jazzmen do a version of it, which he re-titled "Sukiyaki" after his favorite Japanese dish, and had it go into the top ten.
Shortly thereafter, DJ Richard Osbourne of the radio station KORD in Pasco of Washington State started playing the original version by Kyu Sakamoto, using the "Sukiyaki" title. There were frequent requests for the song and Capitol picked up the record. The song went to #1 in Billboard for three weeks and sold over a million copies in the United States.
Kyu Sakamoto was killed on 12 August 1985 at the age of 43 when JAL Flight 123, a 747 was bound from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Osaka. The bulkhead of the plane failed due to a tail strike incident seven years prior. The Pilots attempted to make an Emergency landing but the airplane crashed into a mountain, 60 miles northwest of Tokyo, killing 520 and injuring four. While the plane spiraled downwards for approximately 30 minutes, Kyu was able to write a farewell note on a napkin for his wife.
He was married to Yukiko Kashiwagi in 1971 and they had two daughters, Hanako and Maiko.

While it was also reported that these comments were possibly made in jest which was lost in the translation, the working conditions of Foxconn employees are certainly no joking matter.
In a recent taping on This American Life, author Mike Daisey recorded an interview regarding a visit to Shenzhen, China where the Foxconn manufacturing plant is located. While Foxconn also manufacturers electronics for Dell, HP, Lenovo, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony, Daisey specifically toured the plant where employees create Apple’s MacBook Pros, iPhones and iPads. Foxconn employees have recently been in the news after a threat of mass suicide was issued over a pay dispute, but resolved the issue a few days later. While you can listen to the entire interview at this link, here’s a summation of the working conditions inside the 430,000 person-strong factory that produces Apple’s hardware according to Daisey:
Living within dormitories inside the factory walls, employees are packed into 144 square foot (12-by-12) cement rooms with 15 beds stacked up like bunk-beds. Employees are often placed into rooms where they do not know anyone as well. Any attempt at forming a union is met with arrest and a prison sentence as unions are illegal within China. Workers cleaning iPhone screens used a chemical called hexane, specifically because the chemical solution evaporates faster and allows the production line to speed up. However, a worker on a 34 hour shift dies while Daisey tours the facility. On the factory floor, there’s no talking allowed among the 20,000 to 30,000 workers. There’s also little machinery on the floor since labor costs are far lower than machines. However, Gau has stated publicly that investing in advanced automation is a high priority. Workers that have developed severe carpal-tunnel issues from repeating the same process over and over are simply fired. Foxconn could eliminate this issue by rotating jobs between employees, but they do not. Workers that get severely injured on the job are fired without any severance and workers that complain about working conditions are fired as well as black-listed with all companies that operate within Shenzhen.
According to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman in the same interview, he estimates that workers in the Foxconn manufacturing plant make approximately $250 a month. This comes out to less than $10 a day or about 75 cents an hour on a standard 12-hour shift, far less when a new product is going to be released.
Apple has remained silent on the manufacturing process in China, but has made no attempt to distance themselves from Foxconn or Gou’s remarks. Attempting to improve working conditions in the factory to a level equal with American working conditions would likely have a severe impact on the prices of new iPads, iPhones and other Apple electronics. The company would also make less money per unit sold which would ultimately impact shareholder confidence in the company.

Dominant Social Theme: Global justice is inevitable, and necessary. It's not totalitarian, mind you, merely part of the process of "rationalizing" the decision-making process so everyone knows where they stand.
Free-Market Analysis: "They" are at it again. Supposedly the Dutch government had the bright idea to create a global "financial tribunal." But who gets up in the morning and decides that what the world needs is a better way to resolve disputes about derivatives and other artificial securitized instruments?
The problem is NOT that there is no prestigious and final word from a judicial authority on these insane instruments. The problem is that they exist at all.
They are purely the flotsam and jetsam of central banking. By printing endless amounts of money from nothing, the great central banking families that control tens and even hundreds of trillions of dollars have entirely distorted the world's economy.
We call what has occurred "Dreamtime." It lasted for at least 100 years, throughout the 20th century, and during that time Western middle classes were convinced of the efficacy and necessity of the current system.
Pre-Internet, the power elite's dominant social themes ruled the day. It was a matter of certainty that various fear-based promotions were not only accurate but inevitable. Only a hopelessly optimistic person would have argued that there were not too many people in the world, that starvation was all-but-inevitable, that oil was running out, that the environment was hopelessly befouled, that the world was not in the transformative grip of a terrible global warming.
And yet none of these have proven to be true. They are the malicious memes of the elite, floated to frighten middle classes into giving up wealth and authority to global authorities such as the UN, IMF and World Bank.

Daily Bell: You were recently featured in James Jaeger's film "SPOiLER" and in an earlier film called "Original Intent." Cultural Marxism was a big discussion in these films. Can you expand on that discussion?
Pat Buchanan: I use the phrase Cultural Marxism to describe what Antonio Gramsci had in mind for the West, after he went to Russia. He saw Lenin's Soviet Union as a failure, in that, while the regime had total power and the obedience of its citizens, the people were terrified of it and gave it no loyalty, allegiance or love. And eventually the Soviet Union would and did collapse, as did Mao's China. Gramsci believed in the cultural approach. He believed that, through a long march through the institutions of the West, Marxists could overturn Christianity, the heat shield of the West that made people automatically reject Marxism. If you could extirpate Christian culture from the heart of Western man, with the "acids of modernity," destroy this heat shield, people would embrace Marxist ideas and you could advance your ideology, and the people would be more receptive to it.
What we call Cultural Marxism has certainly been more successful than the economic Marxism of the 19th century and the Leninism associated with it. I have used this term Cultural Marxism along with other terms – socialism, secular humanism. Basically it is a political ideology, a set of ideas, antithetical to traditional, Judeo-Christian beliefs and ideas predominant in this country up until the middle of last century.
Daily Bell: So what happened in the middle of the last century that is accredited to this change?
Pat Buchanan: The revolutions of the 1960s. They began within the mainstream of American thought – the civil rights revolution, anti-war protests – but degenerated into more alien ideas. The anti-Vietnam protests degenerated into anti-Americanism, the belief the United States was on the wrong side in the Cold War. The marches and demonstrations began with "Let's get out of Vietnam" and ended with "Ho, Ho, Ho Chi Minh; the NLF is going to win." The fight for civil rights ended in demands for quotas, affirmative action, set-asides and an entirely different country.
The feminist revolution that began with a desire of women for equal opportunity in academia and the job market degenerated into a clamor for sexual liberation and abortion on demand. And all of these things are part of a great revolution that has put down roots and been extremely successful in converting a significant slice of the country, and capturing half of the elite. I don't think we can reverse this revolution. I think it's divided us permanently and I don't think we are going back to being one nation and one people again.

THE ARGUMENT IS MADE that history has proven that all “undesirable regimes” have eventually been “toppled” and thus American Jewry will fall like all the others.

This is certainly NOT the case with regard to the rule of the invisible governance of American Jewry — (not so “invisible” to the astute observer) — whose reach extends to all the transnational components of globalization and international governing bodies such as the Jewish-operated IMF and World Bank.

Dianetics
Dianetics is a set of ideas and practices regarding the metaphysical relationship between the mind and body that was invented by the science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard and is practiced by followers of Scientology. Hubbard coined Dianetics from the Greek stems dia, meaning through, and nous, meaning mind.
Dianetics explores the existence of a mind with three parts: the conscious "analytical mind," the subconscious "reactive mind", and the somatic mind. The goal of Dianetics is to remove the "reactive mind", which Scientologists believe prevents people from becoming more ethical, more aware, happier and saner. The Dianetics procedure to achieve this is called "auditing". Auditing is a process whereby a series of questions are asked by the Scientology auditor, in an attempt to rid the auditee of the painful experiences of the past which scientologists believe to be the cause of the "reactive mind".
Dianetics grew out of Hubbard's personal experiences and experiments and has been described as a mix of "Western technology and Oriental philosophy". Hubbard stated that Dianetics "forms a bridge between" cybernetics and General Semantics, a set of ideas about education originated by Alfred Korzybski that was receiving much attention in the science fiction world in the 1940s. Hubbard claimed that Dianetics can increase intelligence, eliminate unwanted emotions and alleviate a wide range of illnesses he believed to be psychosomatic. Among the conditions purportedly treated against are arthritis, allergies, asthma, some coronary difficulties, eye trouble, ulcers, migraine headaches, sex deviations and even death. Hubbard variously defined Dianetics as "a spiritual healing technology" and "an organized science of thought.”
Dianetics predates Hubbard's classification of Scientology as "applied religious philosophy". Early in 1951, he expanded his writings to include teachings related to the soul, or "thetan". Dianetics is also practiced by independent groups, collectively called the Free Zone. The Church of Scientology disapproves of Free Zone activities and has prosecuted them in court for misappropriation of Scientology/Dianetics copyrights and trademarks.
Dianetics has achieved no acceptance as a scientific theory and scientists cite Dianetics as an example of a pseudoscience (see below).

Religion for Atheists by Alain de Botton - review
A banal and impudent argument for the uses of religion
The novels of Graham Greene are full of reluctant Christians, men and women who would like to be rid of God but find themselves stuck with him like some lethal addiction. There are, however, reluctant atheists as well, people who long to dunk themselves in the baptismal font but can't quite bring themselves to believe. George Steiner and Roger Scruton have both been among this company at various stages of their careers. The agnostic philosopher Simon Critchley, who currently has a book in the press entitled The Faith of the Faithless, is one of a whole set of leftist thinkers today (Slavoj Žižek, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben) whose work draws deeply on Christian theology. In this respect, the only thing that distinguishes them from the Pope is that they don't believe in God. It is rather like coming across a banker who doesn't believe in profit.
Such reluctant non-belief goes back a long way. Machiavelli thought religious ideas, however vacuous, were a useful way of terrorising the mob. Voltaire rejected the God of Christianity, but was anxious not to infect his servants with his own scepticism. Atheism was fine for the elite, but might breed dissent among the masses. The 18th-century Irish philosopher John Toland, who was rumoured to be the bastard son of a prostitute and a spoilt priest, clung to a "rational" religion himself, but thought the rabble should stick with their superstitions. There was one God for the rich and another for the poor. Edward Gibbon, one of the most notorious sceptics of all time, held that the religious doctrines he despised could still be socially useful. So does the German philosopher Jurgen Habermas today.
Diderot, a doyen of the French Enlightenment, wrote that the Christian gospel might have been a less gloomy affair if Jesus had fondled the breasts of the bridesmaids at Cana and caressed the buttocks of St John. Yet he, too, believed that religion was essential for social unity. Matthew Arnold feared the spread of godlessness among the Victorian working class. It could be countered, he thought, with a poeticised form of a Christianity in which he himself had long ceased to believe. The 19th-century French philosopher Auguste Comte, an out-and-out materialist, designed an ideal society complete with secular versions of God, priests, sacraments, prayer and feast days.
There is something deeply disingenuous about this whole tradition. "I don't believe myself, but it is politically prudent that you should" is the slogan of thinkers supposedly devoted to the integrity of the intellect. If the Almighty goes out of the window, how are social order and moral self-discipline to be maintained? It took the barefaced audacity of Friedrich Nietzsche to point out that if God was dead, then so was Man – or at least the conception of humanity favoured by the guardians of social order. The problem was not so much that God had inconveniently expired; it was that men and women were cravenly pretending that he was still alive, and thus refusing to revolutionise their idea of themselves.
God may be dead, but Alain de Botton's Religion for Atheists is a sign that the tradition from Voltaire to Arnold lives on. The book assumes that religious beliefs are a lot of nonsense, but that they remain indispensable to civilised existence. One wonders how this impeccably liberal author would react to being told that free speech and civil rights were all bunkum, but that they had their social uses and so shouldn't be knocked. Perhaps he might have the faintest sense of being patronised. De Botton claims that one can be an atheist while still finding religion "sporadically useful, interesting and consoling", which makes it sound rather like knocking up a bookcase when you are feeling a bit low. Since Christianity requires one, if need be, to lay down one's life for a stranger, he must have a strange idea of consolation. Like many an atheist, his theology is rather conservative and old-fashioned.
De Botton does not want people literally to believe, but he remains a latter-day Matthew Arnold, as his high Victorian language makes plain. Religion "teaches us to be polite, to honour one another, to be faithful and sober", as well as instructing us in "the charms of community". It all sounds tediously neat and civilised. This is not quite the gospel of a preacher who was tortured and executed for speaking up for justice, and who warned his comrades that if they followed his example they would meet with the same fate. In De Botton's well-manicured hands, this bloody business becomes a soothing form of spiritual therapy, able to "promote morality (and) engender a spirit of community". It is really a version of the Big Society.
Like Comte, De Botton believes in the need for a host of "consoling, subtle or just charming rituals" to restore a sense of community in a fractured society. He even envisages a new kind of restaurant in which strangers would be forced to sit together and open up their hearts to one another. There would be a Book of Agape on hand, which would instruct diners to speak to each other for prescribed lengths of time on prescribed topics. Quite how this will prevent looting and rioting is not entirely clear.
In Comtist style, De Botton also advocates secular versions of such sacred events as the Jewish Day of Atonement, the Catholic Mass and the Zen Buddhist tea ceremony. It is surprising he does not add Celtic versus Rangers. He is also keen on erecting billboards that carry moral or spiritual rather than commercial messages, perhaps (one speculates) in the style of "Leave Young Ladies Alone" or "Tortoises Have Feelings As Well". It is an oddly Orwellian vision for a self-proclaimed libertarian. Religious faith is reduced to a set of banal moral tags. We are invited to contemplate St Joseph in order to learn "how to face the trials of the workplace with a modest and uncomplaining temper". Not even the Walmart management have thought of that one. As a role model for resplendent virtue, we are offered not St Francis of Assisi but Warren Buffett.
What the book does, in short, is hijack other people's beliefs, empty them of content and redeploy them in the name of moral order, social consensus and aesthetic pleasure. It is an astonishingly impudent enterprise. It is also strikingly unoriginal. Liberal-capitalist societies, being by their nature divided, contentious places, are forever in search of a judicious dose of communitarianism to pin themselves together, and a secularised religion has long been one bogus solution on offer. The late Christopher Hitchens, who some people think is now discovering that his broadside God Is Not Great was slightly off the mark, would have scorned any such project. He did not consider that religion was a convenient fiction. He thought it was disgusting. Now there's something believers can get their teeth into …

The dating and genuineness of an ancient text is customarily investigated or affirmed through radiocarbon dating and paleography -- comparing its writing style with that of known ancient documents, and by noting the type of paper or parchment it is written on and its degree of aging. Without the originals, as in the case of the Talmud of Jmmanuel (TJ), one has only its surviving co-discoverer's word that it had been in the form of four rolls of writing, whose leaves were somewhat crumbly in places despite the resin encasement surrounding the leather in which they had been preserved. However, this is much more than scholars have to go on with respect to their studies of the New Testament gospels, for example, for which neither the originals nor their first translations or copies, nor their second copies... exist, and for which of course no eyewitness testimony exists. Thus the genuineness of the TJ has to be determined through indirect means. The question as to whether or not it could be a hoax then may continually arise.

A Sign of Very Bad Things to Come
You may never have heard of the SEA, and may not believe it when I tell you what it is. I am not making this up. The SEA is the "Sewage Enforcement Agency."
The, "Cambria County Sewage Enforcement Agency," protecting society from two dangerous Amish outhouse operators, apprehended them for violating Pennsylvania state sewage laws. They "were sentenced Thursday to 90 days in jail."
Their crime? "Andy Swartzentruber and Sam Yoder do not have permits for outhouses at a school and have been disposing of waste "improperly." The fact that this is how the Amish have done this for hundreds of years, and no one noticed it was "improper" until now is more than a little suspicious—that they would suddenly be threatened with jail over this is downright vicious.
It was not long ago I said I would know things had finally become intolerable in America when it was the Amish that were being targeted. I expected the issue would be one of schooling and endangering children. The actual issue is close to that, and I will not be surprised when it's turned into an excuse to remove the children of the Amish, to protect them from vicious sewage law violators, on some pretence like, "health concerns."
Not Possible?
There was a time when such an outrage would have been unthinkable in this country. That was a time when people prized individual liberty above all things and regarded the lives and liberty of others sacred, not to be violated by anyone. It was a time when most people were proud to be responsible for themselves, self-reliant, independent, and decent. Such people minded their own business and minded it well, and would have regarded any intrusion into the private lives of others a gross indecency.
You may be one who still holds those values; your initial reaction to this story may have been the same as mine—why can't people just mind their own business. What kind of person could bring themselves to harass these people who want nothing from anyone but to be left alone. They harm no one and ask nothing of anybody.

Herbert Brownell, Jr.
Herbert Brownell, Jr. (February 20, 1904 – May 1, 1996) was the Attorney General of the United States in President Eisenhower's cabinet from 1953 to 1957.
Early life
Brownell, one of the seven children of Herbert and May Miller Brownell, was born in Peru, Nebraska. His father was a professor at the University of Nebraska, Teachers College in education and physical sciences as well as an author. His brother, Samuel Brownell, became U.S. Commissioner of Education. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Nebraska in 1924, and, in his senior year, being a member of the Society of Innocents, he attended Yale Law School, earning his law degree in 1927. While at the University of Nebraska he joined The Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
Susan B. Anthony was Herbert Brownell's cousin.
Career
Brownell was admitted to the bar in New York, and began his practice in New York City. In February 1929, he joined the law firm of Lord Day & Lord in New York, and except for periods of public service remained with them until his retirement in 1989. He married Doris McCarter on June 16, 1934. They had four children and remained together until she died on June 12, 1979. He married again in 1987 to the former Mrs. Marion Taylor, but the couple separated in December, 1989, and was divorced.
Besides his law practice, Brownell had a long and active political career as a Republican. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1932, and served there from 1933 to 1937. In 1942, he was the campaign manager for Thomas E. Dewey's election as Governor of New York. He also managed Dewey's 1944 and 1948 campaigns for president. From 1944 to 1946 he was Chairman of the Republican National Committee, where he focused on modernizing the RNC with advanced polling methods and fundraising techniques. He was credited by many as being instrumental in helping the Republicans gain control of the United States Congress in the 1946 off-year elections.
Political career
He was instrumental in convincing General Dwight D. Eisenhower to run for President of the United States, and worked in Eisenhower's 1952 campaign. Eisenhower appointed him as Attorney General on January 21, 1953 and he served until November 8, 1957. Early in his term, he was involved in several landmark civil rights cases, including Brown v. Board of Education. Although it was weakened by the United States Senate, he drafted the legislative proposal that ultimately became the Civil Rights Act of 1957, which was the first civil rights law enacted in over 80 years. Because of his strong stance in favor of civil rights, Brownell became very unpopular in the South. Eisenhower wished to nominate Brownell to the Supreme Court when vacancies occurred in 1957 and 1958, but felt he could not because segregationists in the Senate would fight and defeat the nomination.
Brownell later served as the United States representative to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, and in 1972-1974 as a special U.S. envoy to Mexico for negotiations over the Colorado River.
In addition to many honors and other civic roles, Brownell was President of the New York City Bar Association in 1982. From 1986 to 1989 he served on the Commission for the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution. He died of cancer in New York City on May 1, 1996, aged 92.

Susan Brownell Anthony (February 15, 1820 – March 13, 1906) was a prominent American civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in the 19th century women's rights movement to introduce women's suffrage into the United States. She was co-founder of the first Women's Temperance Movement with Elizabeth Cady Stanton as President. She also co-founded the women's rights journal, The Revolution. She traveled the United States and Europe, and averaged 75 to 100 speeches per year. She was one of the important advocates in leading the way for women's rights to be acknowledged and instituted in the American government.

Evangelical Leaders Throw Support Behind Santorum
Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has received a powerful shot in the arm as top US evangelical leaders endorsed his White House bid ahead of a crucial South Carolina primary.
The endorsement came after about 150 influential Christian conservative leaders met at a ranch outside of Houston, Texas, in hopes of rallying their forces around one candidate before the January 21 vote in the state where evangelicals and social conservatives make up 60 percent of the Republican electorate.
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and one of the organizers of the meeting, said Santorum, a former US senator from Pennsylvania, had received 85 out of 114 possible votes, thus securing the backing of the group.
The endorsement includes financial support from key religious conservative groups, Perkins explained Saturday without offering specifics. Participants included James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family; Kelly Shackelford, president and CEO of the Liberty Institute; Don Wildmon, founder of the American Family Association; and Gary Bauer, president of American Values.
“You will see these organizations engaging openly on his behalf – especially in the state of South Carolina,” Perkins told reporters. “We believe that with strong consensus coming behind him that can aid in the fundraising that he will need to be successful in the primary.”
Santorum finished a close second in the Iowa caucuses earlier this month, losing to frontrunner Mitt Romney only by eight votes. He was tied for fourth place with former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich in New Hampshire.
Many social conservatives perceive Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, as a moderate and question his commitment to priority issues such as opposition to abortion and gay marriages.
But not everyone is convinced the endorsement will help Santorum defeat Romney.
The Reverend Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, believes the summit has just exposed the fault lines among religious conservatives.
"The real division is between the idealists who are looking for the right president, anybody but Romney, and the pragmatists who don't want to cut off their access to the next president, who they think will be Romney," Jeffress told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Meanwhile, Romney's team hit back Saturday at President Barack Obama's campaign for portraying him as a jobs destroyer.
Romney, favorite to take on Obama in November, sought to turn the tables on the Democratic president, with a senior campaign aide saying the candidate's business experience trumped Obama's background as a "community organizer."
"No amount of speechmaking will persuade the American people that his economic record has been anything other than an unmitigated disaster," Romney's policy director Lanhee Chen said of Obama in a statement.
Attacks by Obama aides on Romney's economic credentials on Friday added to similar outbursts from the latter's Republican rivals over his 15-year tenure at equity firm Bain Capital and disputed claims that he created 100,000 jobs.
The Obama campaign's intervention whipped up a new storm around Romney, who has been battered by the jobs debate, in which he has been repeatedly accused of firing thousands of workers while securing millions in profits for himself.
But Chen laid the economic blame at Obama's door, stating that the number of Americans unemployed, underemployed or no longer seeking work had risen from 22 million people to nearly 24 million during the incumbent's reign.
"In January 2009, the month President Obama assumed office, the total US public debt outstanding was $10.4 trillion. Today it exceeds more than $15 trillion," Chen added.
"The American people are all too well aware that this is money that they must eventually pay back."
A poll released late Friday gave Romney a slim lead in South Carolina.
Public Policy Polling (PPP) gave Romney 29 percent of the vote, former House speaker Newt Gingrich received 24 percent, and libertarian candidate Ron Paul 15 percent.
Santorum, seen as much more conservative than Romney, was on 14 percent, with Texas Governor Rick Perry (five percent), and former US ambassador to China Jon Huntsman (one percent) well back in the race.
"Voters there are overwhelmingly focused on the economy this year and that's working to (Romney's) advantage," the pollsters said.
"Asked who they trust most on economic issues, 35 percent pick Romney to 25 percent for Gingrich, 16 percent for Paul, and 10 percent for Santorum," PPP added.
The Romney campaign also Saturday released a video playing up the former Massachusetts governor's pro-life stance on abortion, one of the hot-button issues on which opponents have accused him of being a flip-flopper.

Vladimir Lenin - Propaganda and Agitation
In his book, What is to be Done, published in 1902, Vladimir Lenin defined propaganda as the use of historical and scientific arguments to indoctrinate the educated and intelligent masses. Agitation was described by Lenin as the use of slogans, stories and selective half-truths to exploit the grievances of the un-educated and ignorant masses.
Deceit is Justified
Every unit of the Communist Party was to have an Agit-Prop section. Deceit in propaganda is justified because the end justifies the means. As Vladimir Lenin regularly said: Treaties are like pie crusts, made to be broken. To tell the truth is a petty bourgeois habit, but to lie and to lie convincingly is a sign of superior intelligence.
The End Justifies the Means
The aim of propaganda is to rally people behind a cause. If this requires exaggerating, misrepresenting, or even lying about the issues, in order to gain that support, the end justifies the means.
Tactics of Propaganda
Common tactics used in propaganda are:
1. Ignoring the historic context
2. Using selective stories
3. Utilising a narrow source of experts, those who tow the party line
4. Demonising the enemy and
5. Using a narrow focus (the zoom lens, rather than the wide angle lens of context.)

What few people realise is that Nazi propaganda was based and modelled upon Allied propaganda against Germany in WWI. Joseph Goebbels was an ardent student of American public relations pioneer Edward Bernays.

Edward L. Bernays (1891-1995) was a nephew of Sigmund Freud. Bernays was a theatrical publicist who was employed by George Creel as a propagandist for the Committee on Public Information (CPI). President Woodrow Wilson of the United States, by executive order, created the Committee on Public Information in association with the Military Intelligence Bureau. The CPI was America's propaganda office. The CPI defined propaganda as: The systematic, widespread dissemination, or promotion, of particular ideas, doctrines, or practices, meant to further a particular cause or agenda and weaken that of another. It is a systematic effort to manipulate attitudes, beliefs and actions by the use of symbols.
Hidden Manipulators
German philosopher George Hegel, in his 1821 book: The Philosophy of Right, explained how in democracies the public is manipulated and persuaded by hidden persuaders and hidden manipulators. French author Anatole France, wrote: Democracy is run by an unseen engineer.
Controlling Public Opinion
Bernays based much of his methodology upon the works of Walter Lippmann, who wrote about controlling and managing public opinion. His ideas were later published in Public Opinion (1922) and The Phantom Public (1925).
Enlightening Elites
Walter Lippmann was a member of US Army Military Intelligence during World War I. Lippmann believed that most people are irrational and act chaotically. Because people are unable to independently make rational choices, they need to be guided by a specialised class of enlightened elites. Lippmann described people as: simple minded and sheep-like, incapable of formulating or organising their desires, interests and wishes. Therefore enlightened elites can lead and educate the masses. As Lippmann put it: Making of one general will out of a multitude of general wishes. Bernays stated: The public must be regimented.
Mobilising Hate and War
In 1927, Harold D. Lasswell, a professor in Political Science at the University of Chicago, analysed the propaganda techniques employed by the Allies in WWI: A new and subtler instrument must weld thousands and even millions of human beings into one amalgamated mass of hate and war and hope... propaganda. It is the new dynamic of society... the fact remains that propaganda is one of the most powerful instrumentalities in the modern world. Propaganda is a reflex to the immensity, the rationality and the woefulness of the modern world. Lasswell explained that to: Mobilise the hatred of the people against their enemy, represent the opposing nation as a menacing, murderous aggressor... represent the opposing nation as satanic; it violates all the moral standards...
Objectives of Propaganda
Lasswell identified four major objectives of Propaganda:
1. To mobilise hatred against the enemy who must be de-humanised, portrayed as barbaric, brutal, cruel and uncivilised.
2. To preserve the friendship of Allies.
3. To preserve the friendship, and if possible, to procure the cooperation of neutrals; and
4. To demoralise the enemy.
Warning Against War
Before being elected as a candidate for peace in the Presidential Elections of 1916, Woodrow Wilson warned: Lead this people into war, and they'll forget there was ever such a thing as tolerance. To fight, you must be brutal and ruthless, and the spirit of ruthless brutality will enter into the very fibre of national life, infecting the congress, the courts, the policeman on the beat, the man in the street. In January of 1916, Wilson stated: This is a government of the people and this people is not going to choose war.
Reversal of Policy
After being elected, under the slogan of he has kept us out of the war, Woodrow Wilson established the Committee on Public Information which forged the nation (which was overwhelmingly opposed to intervention) into a situation where, if anyone believed that America's entry into Europe's war was a mistake, then they were branded a traitor!
Changing Perspectives
More than 8 million German-Americans lived in the USA and many were sympathetic to the cause of their homeland. One third of Americans were immigrants. Most Americans were not connected to the European conflict by blood, or capital and were not interested in waging war overseas. The Committee on Public Information (CPI) developed into the most formidable propaganda apparatus in history. A muck-raking journalist, George Creel, was appointed to lead the CPI. With a phenomenal budget, the CPI recruited from the best of business, media, academia and the art world. The CPI blended advertising techniques with a sophisticated understanding of human psychology.
Democratic Propaganda
It was the first time that a modern government disseminated propaganda on such a large scale. Although propaganda came to be linked with totalitarian regimes such as the Soviet Union and Red China, it is a fact of history that it first emerged in a democratic state. Although, as a journalist, George Creel had been an outspoken critic of censorship, the CPI immediately took steps to limit conflicting information. With the Espionage Act and Sedition Act Voluntary Guidelines were enforced on the news media and ensured that the mass media in the United States was flooded with pro-war material and perspectives. On any given week more than 20,000 newspaper columns were filled with material gleaned from CPI press releases.
Mobilising the Masses
The CPI created a Division of Syndicated Features and recruited the help of leading novelists, short story writers and essayists to present the pro-war position in popular digestible format, reaching 12 million readers a month. The Division of Pictorial Publicity had at its disposal the most talented advertising illustrators and cartoonists of the time. Powerful posters painted in patriotic colours presented compelling images throughout the country. The poster propaganda motivated millions to enlist in the army and navy or buy Liberty bonds. The Division of Films ensured that the war was promoted in the cinema. The Hollywood film industry wholeheartedly supported the war effort with movie titles like: The Kaiser - The Beast of Berlin, Wolves of Kultur, To Hell with the Kaiser andPerishing's Crusaders!
Propaganda Changes Attitudes
The cause of the Allies was creatively publicised in every available communication channel, including pulpits. Lasswell pointed out that propaganda wins wars, with words, pictures, songs, parades and many similar devices... by the manipulation of collective attitudes.
Emotional Appeal
CPI propaganda showed the way for future propaganda agencies by appealing to the heart, not the mind. Emotional agitation and skilful manipulation made use of manufactured atrocity stories and simplistic slogans such as: Make the world safe for Democracy! Will Irwin, a member of the CPI, wrote after the war: We never told the whole truth - not by any manner of means. G. S. Viereck quoted a Military Intelligence officer who declared: You can't tell them the truth. Victories were routinely manufactured by American military authorities, while defeats were suppressed. Dishonesty was encouraged.
Sentimentality
The analysts attributed the failure of German propaganda in America to the fact that: It emphasised logic over passion. As Count von Bernstorff observed: The outstanding characteristic of the average American is rather a great, though superficial, sentimentality. The factual German Press releases failed to grasp this.
Altering Perceptions
As Lasswell observed: So great are the psychological resistances to war in modern nations that every war must appear to be a war of defence against a menacing, murderous aggressor. There must be no ambiguity about who the public is to hate.
Made Up Atrocity Stories
Bernays openly admitted that he and his colleagues used made-up stories to provoke the hate and fear necessary to raise war-bonds and recruits for the war. Some of their stories, such as a bathtub full of eyeballs and children being killed by the enemy were actually recycled stories from previous conflicts.
Propaganda Kills
So effective was the anti-German propaganda of the CPI in the USA that Dachshunds had to be renamed, 14 states banned the teaching, or speaking, of German in their public schools. Mobs assaulted American immigrants from Germany. At least one man, Robert Prager, a German coal miner, was lynched by an angry mob in Illinois.
Appealing to Idealists
The CPI recognised that while emotional appeals and simplistic stereotypes of the enemy could influence many, the intellectuals and pacifists needed different motivation. To them American military intervention in Europe was described as: a campaign to end warfare forever and establish a league of nations. To industrialists the war was modified as a conflict to destroy the competition of German industry. The propagandist does not need to ask if it is true, but merely, does it work?
The Value of Propaganda in Peacetime
In the final months of 1918, a war-weary American public ousted the Democrats who had led them into WWI. The Republican majority in Congress brought the CPI under increasing scrutiny. The director of CPI's foreign division later reported: The history of propaganda in the war would scarcely be worthy of consideration here, but for one fact - it did not stop with the Armistice. No indeed! The methods invented and tried out in war were too valuable for the uses of governments, factions and special interests.
Regimenting the Public Mind
Edward Bernays took the techniques he had learnt in the CPI to Madison Avenue and became an outspoken proponent of propaganda as a tool for democratic governments. It was of course the astounding success of propaganda during the war that opened the eyes of the intelligent few in all departments of life to the possibilities of regimenting the public mind. Subverting Society
Most Americans came to realise that they had been lied to and manipulated by deceit disguised as news. Many sought to pin complete responsibility for America's involvement in the ruinous World War on hate mongering militarists in the CPI. However, as one noted: Ultimately their guilt is less important than the questions their activities raised about the role of propaganda in a democratic society. The whole theory of democratic society was rooted in the belief that free citizens could form their own opinions about the issues of the day to decide their collective destiny. Freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of association, freedom of thought and freedom of religion are fundamental necessities for any democratic process.
Is Propaganda Compatible with Freedom?
However, during the First World War, America's political leaders decided that their citizens were not making the correct decisions, quickly enough. So they flooded the channels of communication with dishonest messages that were designed to stir up emotions and provoke hatred of their long time trading partner, Germany. The war came to an end. But the propaganda did not. Today many who espouse the ideals of democracy behave like dictators and propagandists. The question is whether propaganda is compatible with freedom. Propaganda clearly undermines a population's ability to think clearly and critically about world events. Simplistic, emotional appeals undermine logic and reason.
Discerning Between Information and Disinformation
Students of propaganda soon noted that while the CPI was the largest propaganda operation to that date, it was not actually the first such deception operation. Shortly after the end of the American Civil War (or War Between the States) journalist Colburn Adams wrote: The future historian of the late war will have a very difficult task to perform... sifting the truth from falsehood as it appears in official records.
Newspaper Wars
Two prominent newspapermen took the credit for leading America into the Spanish-American war of 1898. William Randolf Hearst (1863 -1951), and Joseph Pulitzer, editorially clamoured for US military intervention against Spain. Through disinformation and media manipulation these newspaper tycoons induced the United States to wage an unnecessary war against Spain. Sensational, inflammatory and propagandistic articles and editorials in Pulitzer's World and Hearst's Journal succeeded in inciting war hysteria and public enthusiasm for war with Spain.
Organising a War
Randolf Hearst famously sent artist Frederick Remington, and other Journal correspondents to report on the Civil War in Cuba. When Remington reported: Everything is quiet. There is no trouble here. There will be no war. I wish to return. Hearst sent the following famous telegram in reply: Please remain. You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war.
Inciting Conflict
Pulitzer and Hearst published inaccurate coverage, rumour, subterfuge, hearsay and outright fictitious reports to drum up a feverous public demand for war. On 15 February 1898, the US Battleship Maine blew up in Havanna harbour. The cause of this explosion was never determined, but the immediate US media reaction was to blame Spain. Pulitzer and Hearst clamoured for war with titles such as: Maine explosion caused by bomb or torpedo? Later Hearst's Journal ran the headline: How do you like the Journals' war?
The Father of Spin
After WWI, Edward Bernays pioneered Public Relations (PR) and became known as The Father of Spin. As the PR consulter for the American Tobacco Company, he campaigned to convince American women that they should smoke Lucky Strike cigarettes (the torches of freedom) to emancipate themselves!
Public Relations
Today American businesses spend trillions of dollars on marketing. PR firms employ over 150,000 workers.
Adolf Hitler on Propaganda
In Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler analysed Allied propaganda techniques used during the First World War:The art of propaganda led in understanding the emotional ideas of the masses and finding, through a psychologically correct form, the way to the attention, and then to the heart, of the masses. ...the purpose of propaganda is ...to convince ...the masses ...its effect for the most part must be aimed at the emotions... The war propaganda of the English and the Americans was psychologically sound. By representing the Germans to their own people as Barbarians and Huns, they prepared the individual for the terrors of war... all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan... to be a leader means to be able to move the masses... the intelligence of the masses is small. Their forgetfulness is great. They must be told the same thing a thousand times.
Tactics of Propaganda
The tactics of propaganda have been analysed by numerous studies. Professor Johann Galtung listed some of the tactics used in propaganda, including:
1. Decontextualizing violence: Focusing on the irrational without looking at the reasons...
2. Dualism: Reducing the number of parties in a conflict to two, (when often more are involved.)
3. Manichaeism: Portraying one side as good and demonising the other as evil.
4. Armageddon: Presenting violence as inevitable, omitting alternatives.
5. Confusion: Focusing only on the conflict arena, but not on the forces and factors that influence the violence.
6. Never explaining why there are acts of revenge and spirals of violence.
7. Failure to explore the causes of escalation and the impact of media coverage itself.
8. Failure to explore the goals of outside interventionists, especially big powers and bankers.
9. Failure to explore peace proposals and offer images of peaceful outcomes.
10. Confusing cease fires and negotiations with actual peace and
11. Omitting reconciliation as a viable option.
Distorting Perspectives
Propaganda does not need to be true, as long as it is plausible. Sometimes it can tell the truth, but withhold the point of view from the other side to create a distorted perspective.
Preparing a Nation for War
British journalist, Phillip Knightley, identified the four stages in preparing a nation for war:
1. The Crisis: Negotiations are failing! We're on the brink of war! War is inevitable!
2. The Demonization of the enemy leader.
3. The Demonization of the enemy as individuals.
4. Atrocities: Even making up stories to whip up and strengthen emotional reactions.
Betrayal of Trust
Knightley observed: The media demands that we trust it, but too often that trust has been betrayed.

Words are Weapons
Words are weapons in warfare. Propaganda involves word games. Name calling of the target nation by labelling people, groups and institutions in a negative manner.
Glittering Generalities
Glittering generality with regard to allies, labelling their people, groups and institutions in a positive manner.
Euphemisms
Euphemisms are used to pacify the audience with bland meanings and connotations, such aspacification, technical incursion, etc. Civilian casualties are referred to as: collateral damage. Murder is replaced with: liquidation. Terror bombing of cities is called: saturation bombing or strategic bombing campaign. Starvation of civilian populations is called an economic blockade or sanctions.Looting of farms and murder of farmers is called: dekulakisation or land reform. Racial decriminalisation is called: Black Economic Empowerment and Affirmative Action. Sexual perversion is called Alternative Lifestyles.
False Connections
False connections are used to transfer symbols and imagery of positive institutions to strengthen the acceptance of the cause. Making use of testimonies from individuals not qualified to make the claims made (for example having sportsmen advise on how one should vote in a Referendum!).
Ordinary Appeals
Special appeals include: the everybody's doing it, join the bandwagon argument, through words designed to heighten or exploit fear and an appeal to ordinary citizens by leaders doing ordinary things that the viewer can identify with.
Thought Control
In 1921, American journalist Walter Lippmann said that the art of democracy requires themanufacture of consent. George Orwell described it as thought control. As democracies cannot control people by force, it controls them by influencing what they think, how they think and what they think about. Propaganda is to democracies what violence is to dictatorships.
Gullibility of the Public
Propaganda tends to work because people wish to believe the best about themselves and their country. It is often very hard to believe that our own leaders could possibly lie to us! From how the media portray them, they seem such likeable people!
Crowd Psychology
During the Nuremberg Trials, General Hermann Goring was reported to have said: It is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it be a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism, and exposing their country to danger. It works the same in any country.
Perception Management
John Rendon, the Founder of the Rendon Group, a PR Agency, told cadets at the US Air Force Academy: I am a politician... who uses communication to meet public policy... objectives. In fact I am an information warrior and a perception manager. Did you ever stop to wonder how the people of Kuwait City, after being held hostage for seven long and painful months, were able to get hand-held American flags? Well, you now know the answer. That was one of my jobs.
Manipulating Public Opinion
Another propaganda tactic is character assassination. Smear tactics are used to discredit, or destroy the reputation of someone perceived as an obstacle to the policy makers. The calculated manipulation of public opinion to serve political and ideological interests is achieved by appealing to the emotions to create reality which demands the action desired by the policy makers.
Holocaust in Rwanda
In Holocaust in Rwanda I documented the ease with which the orchestrators of the genocide in Rwanda confused international journalists and abused the national media to mobilise the unprecedented concentration of carnage. The massacres were meticulously organised in advance. The MRND government of Rwanda manipulated the international media by portraying the killings asspontaneous, tribal anarchy, uncontrolled tribal killing, tribalism, the result of the war.
Disinformation
A smokescreen of disinformation allowed the killers to proceed with their diabolical plans and kill over 800,000 people in a mere six weeks. They isolated their victims by imposing a news blackout, cutting telephone links, establishing a dense network of roadblocks and imposing a nationwide curfew. By cutting communications and restricting travel, they isolated their victims and sought to stifle the flow of news. They also timed the genocide to be launched on 6 April 1994, when most African correspondents were in South Africa for the Mandela elections. With most foreign news distracted by events in South Africa, the mass murderers in Rwanda were able to play the humanitarian card, pleading for emergency aid, all while they were engaged in genocide.
Mobilising Mass Murder
While deceiving the international news media, the MRND mobilised their national news media to denigrate all the targeted Tutsi tribe as foreigners, Hamitic invaders, cockroaches, racial supremistswho needed to be returned to Ethiopia by having their bodies thrown into the Nyabarongo River. Wild rumours were recklessly spread by Radio RTLM accusing the Tutsis of sinister plots. Popular poets and songwriters composed songs to provoke the majority Hutu tribe to hate their Tutsi neighbours. By totally dominating the mass media, the Hutu extremists were able to mould minds and fill them with hatred and a lust for blood. Hundreds-of-thousands of Hutu people were motivated to murder their neighbours. Hutu teachers murdered Tutsi students. Hutu doctors and nurses murdered Tutsi patients. Hutu priests and bishops murdered Tutsi congregants. The Holocaust in Rwanda was yet another proof that propaganda kills.
Dehumanise the Enemy
Many of the massacres of prisoners and atrocities committed against civilians in WWI and WWII, including the systematic saturation bombing of cities, would not have been possible without the demonization of the targeted enemy and their civilian population by propaganda. The farm invasions in Zimbabwe were preceded by state propaganda vilifying whites in general and farmers in particular. The Mau Mau murders in Kenya and the Simba massacres in the Congo were also motivated and mobilised by propaganda which dehumanised the targeted white farmers and missionaries. The incessant, anti-white propaganda in South Africa has led to over 3,000 brutal murders of white farmers in some of the most torturous ways possible. Songs such as 'Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!' sung by prominent ANC leaders are like pouring petrol on a fire. The fact is that propaganda changes perceptions and people. Propaganda kills.
The Truth Sets Free
That is why it is absolutely essential that we know the truth of history to recognise the lies of propaganda. We need to study the truth in the Bible so that we can be freed from the deceptions of the world.

10 reasons the U.S. is no longer the land of the free
Even as we pass judgment on countries we consider unfree, Americans remain confident that any definition of a free nation must include their own — the land of free. Yet, the laws and practices of the land should shake that confidence. In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. The most recent example of this was the National Defense Authorization Act, signed Dec. 31, which allows for the indefinite detention of citizens. At what point does the reduction of individual rights in our country change how we define ourselves?
These countries also have constitutions that purport to guarantee freedoms and rights. But their governments have broad discretion in denying those rights and few real avenues for challenges by citizens — precisely the problem with the new laws in this country.
The list of powers acquired by the U.S. government since 9/11 puts us in rather troubling company.
Assassination of U.S. citizens
President Obama has claimed, as President George W. Bush did before him, the right to order the killing of any citizen considered a terrorist or an abettor of terrorism. Last year, he approved the killing of U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaqi and another citizen under this claimed inherent authority. Last month, administration officials affirmed that power, stating that the president can order the assassination of any citizen whom he considers allied with terrorists. (Nations such as Nigeria, Iran and Syria have been routinely criticized for extrajudicial killings of enemies of the state.)
Indefinite detention
Under the law signed last month, terrorism suspects are to be held by the military; the president also has the authority to indefinitely detain citizens accused of terrorism. While the administration claims that this provision only codified existing law, experts widely contest this view, and the administration has opposed efforts to challenge such authority in federal courts. The government continues to claim the right to strip citizens of legal protections based on its sole discretion. (China recently codified a more limited detention law for its citizens, while countries such as Cambodia have been singled out by the United States for “prolonged detention.”)
Arbitrary justice
The president now decides whether a person will receive a trial in the federal courts or in a military tribunal, a system that has been ridiculed around the world for lacking basic due process protections. Bush claimed this authority in 2001, and Obama has continued the practice. (Egypt and China have been denounced for maintaining separate military justice systems for selected defendants, including civilians.)
The president may now order warrantless surveillance, including a new capability to force companies and organizations to turn over information on citizens’ finances, communications and associations. Bush acquired this sweeping power under the Patriot Act in 2001, and in 2011, Obama extended the power, including searches of everything from business documents to library records. The government can use “national security letters” to demand, without probable cause, that organizations turn over information on citizens — and order them not to reveal the disclosure to the affected party. (Saudi Arabia and Pakistan operate under laws that allow the government to engage in widespread discretionary surveillance.)
Secret evidence
The government now routinely uses secret evidence to detain individuals and employs secret evidence in federal and military courts. It also forces the dismissal of cases against the United States by simply filing declarations that the cases would make the government reveal classified information that would harm national security — a claim made in a variety of privacy lawsuits and largely accepted by federal judges without question. Even legal opinions, cited as the basis for the government’s actions under the Bush and Obama administrations, have been classified. This allows the government to claim secret legal arguments to support secret proceedings using secret evidence. In addition, some cases never make it to court at all. The federal courts routinely deny constitutional challenges to policies and programs under a narrow definition of standing to bring a case.
War crimes
The world clamored for prosecutions of those responsible for waterboarding terrorism suspects during the Bush administration, but the Obama administration said in 2009 that it would not allow CIA employees to be investigated or prosecuted for such actions. This gutted not just treaty obligations but the Nuremberg principles of international law. When courts in countries such as Spain moved to investigate Bush officials for war crimes, the Obama administration reportedly urged foreign officials not to allow such cases to proceed, despite the fact that the United States has long claimed the same authority with regard to alleged war criminals in other countries. (Various nations have resisted investigations of officials accused of war crimes and torture. Some, such as Serbia and Chile, eventually relented to comply with international law; countries that have denied independent investigations include Iran, Syria and China.)
Secret court
The government has increased its use of the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which has expanded its secret warrants to include individuals deemed to be aiding or abetting hostile foreign governments or organizations. In 2011, Obama renewed these powers, including allowing secret searches of individuals who are not part of an identifiable terrorist group. The administration has asserted the right to ignore congressional limits on such surveillance. (Pakistan places national security surveillance under the unchecked powers of the military or intelligence services.)
Immunity from judicial review
Like the Bush administration, the Obama administration has successfully pushed for immunity for companies that assist in warrantless surveillance of citizens, blocking the ability of citizens to challenge the violation of privacy. (Similarly, China has maintained sweeping immunity claims both inside and outside the country and routinely blocks lawsuits against private companies.)
Continual monitoring of citizens
The Obama administration has successfully defended its claim that it can use GPS devices to monitor every move of targeted citizens without securing any court order or review. (Saudi Arabia has installed massive public surveillance systems, while Cuba is notorious for active monitoring of selected citizens.)
Extraordinary renditions
The government now has the ability to transfer both citizens and noncitizens to another country under a system known as extraordinary rendition, which has been denounced as using other countries, such as Syria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan, to torture suspects. The Obama administration says it is not continuing the abuses of this practice under Bush, but it insists on the unfettered right to order such transfers — including the possible transfer of U.S. citizens.
Final Comments: Land of the Free?
These new laws have come with an infusion of money into an expanded security system on the state and federal levels, including more public surveillance cameras, tens of thousands of security personnel and a massive expansion of a terrorist-chasing bureaucracy.
Some politicians shrug and say these increased powers are merely a response to the times we live in. Thus, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) could declare in an interview last spring without objection that “free speech is a great idea, but we’re in a war.” Of course, terrorism will never “surrender” and end this particular “war.”
Other politicians rationalize that, while such powers may exist, it really comes down to how they are used. This is a common response by liberals who cannot bring themselves to denounce Obama as they did Bush. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), for instance, has insisted that Congress is not making any decision on indefinite detention: “That is a decision which we leave where it belongs — in the executive branch.”
And in a signing statement with the defense authorization bill, Obama said he does not intend to use the latest power to indefinitely imprison citizens. Yet, he still accepted the power as a sort of regretful autocrat.
An authoritarian nation is defined not just by the use of authoritarian powers, but by the ability to use them. If a president can take away your freedom or your life on his own authority, all rights become little more than a discretionary grant subject to executive will.
The framers lived under autocratic rule and understood this danger better than we do. James Madison famously warned that we needed a system that did not depend on the good intentions or motivations of our rulers: “If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”
Benjamin Franklin was more direct. In 1787, a Mrs. Powel confronted Franklin after the signing of the Constitution and asked, “Well, Doctor, what have we got — a republic or a monarchy?” His response was a bit chilling: “A republic, Madam, if you can keep it.”
Since 9/11, we have created the very government the framers feared: a government with sweeping and largely unchecked powers resting on the hope that they will be used wisely.
The indefinite-detention provision in the defense authorization bill seemed to many civil libertarians like a betrayal by Obama. While the president had promised to veto the law over that provision, Levin, a sponsor of the bill, disclosed on the Senate floor that it was in fact the White House that approved the removal of any exception for citizens from indefinite detention.
Dishonesty from politicians is nothing new for Americans. The real question is whether we are lying to ourselves when we call this country the land of the free.

Can vaccines really co-opt, improve upon, and replace natural immunity with synthetic immunity?
How many will this require?
Are we not already at the critical threshold of vaccine overload?
By "improving" on our humanness in this way, are we not also at the same moment departing dramatically from it?
