Words Matter
There's an old wisdom
observed many times in many different forms by thoughtful folk over the ages: You don't know what you don't know.
Everyone has seen this expressed in one way or another, and it is fairly
self-evident, even though it is a wisdom that most of us would do well to have
tattooed on the back of our hands (or posted in every voting booth), because
it's so easy to forget.
Here's another truth
of a similar character, but subtler: You can't think what you can't say. This
latter wisdom is also ancient, and finds expression in the mystic traditions of
most cultures as the principle that one can't truly have mastery over a thing
unless and until one has learned its true name. In its grossest sense, this
simply means that if you haven't got a word or words for something, you can't
manipulate it in your mind. Just like "You don't know what you don't
know", You can't think what you can't say is a self-evident fact once
articulated. But since we can't readily imagine that there is anything for
which we have no word(s) ('cause... you know... we have no words for it...),
it's easy to be oblivious to this limitation.
But being oblivious
to this limitation can be dangerous because people compelled to think or speak
about something for which they have no words automatically default to words
which aren't quite accurate. Such alternatives serve as varyingly-distorting
placeholders for a more accurate word which is unavailable due to not being
known, not having yet been coined, involving a concept too unsettling to be
squarely named or because an interested communicant has control of the
conversation and is imposing an inaccurate word for his own purposes. This
leads to a corollary to You can't think what you can't say, which is: You can't
think clearly about what you can't or won't name accurately.
Sometimes the
substitution/distortion is totally inadvertent-- indeed, inescapable. For
instance, at one time the elaborately described and differentiated
psychological subdivisions and complexes that are now believed more accurate
were at one time represented by only four words: Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Melancholy
and Choleric. The newer words now used to replace the Big Four with today's Big
Four Hundred (or four thousand) didn't exist (and/or hadn't been given their
current meanings), and the thoughts that are now made possible by their use
were not possible. It was possible to have a sense that there was more there
than the Big Four described, but only a fuzzy sense. The new words had to be
invented or evolved before the modern complexity could become a meaningful
reality.
Sometimes the
substitution/distortion is totally deliberate, as when euphemisms are deployed.
A euphemism is a term or expression deliberately used as a substitute for
something too unsettling to name accurately. Because the euphemism is used, the
subject for which it is substituted is not squarely faced, and is not
rationally considered. For instance, when those advocating violence describe
incidental dead innocents as "collateral damage", it is for the very
purpose of keeping "innocent deaths" from being rationally and accurately
considered (because whatever violence is being advocated won't be supported in
the light of full understanding of such side effects).
Then there is the
substitution/distortion that arises inadvertently (because to begin with there
is no new, more accurate word added to the language) and is prolonged because
the very distortion in the first instance renders the need for better accuracy
difficult to recognize (and the distortion is nurtured by interests benefiting
from the inaccuracy). One example would be the use of the word
"money" in reference to "federal reserve notes" (FRNs).
FRNs aren't
"money" as the term is accurately used, either as a matter of law
(which defines real American money in terms of gold and silver), or as the word
is commonly meant (which is in reference to something of inherent,
widely-recognized value that is durable, easily divisible, provable as to its
character and purity, and portable). But the introduction of FRNs into use here
in America was a drawn-out process during which the scabrous things went from
being redeemable warehouse receipts for real money (at which point calling them
"money" was not a wildly inaccurate short-hand) to their current
status as nothing but a bet that there will be another guy willing to take some
in exchange for his real goods on the gamble that there'll be yet another guy
willing to take them from him in turn (meaning that calling FRNs
"money" now is wildly inaccurate and misleading).
So, because the
manner in which their actual nature evolved over the course of a couple of
generations caused the distortion to conceal itself (and because of the active
encouragement of inaccuracy by vested interests), most Americans have been
induced to use the term "money" when thinking or speaking about FRNs.
Thus, most Americans have been made incapable of accurately considering the
difference between FRNs and real money, and thinking clearly about the threat
to American well-being that the former represent.
Here's another
example of an originally inadvertent substitution/distortion that has been
prolonged: the use of the term "taxes" for the fees the federal
government has been Constitutionally-authorized to charge for its services.
Perhaps because there
was no different and more nuanced term available in the English language at the
time of the Constitutional Convention, and because it was widely understood in
the states at that time that America was not just setting up a homegrown
monarchy of the same sort under which the English crown was understood to
possess an ownership interest in other people's property, the word
"taxes" was used in our fundamental law even though we WEREN'T
referring to or authorizing some kind of governmental claim of right to anyone
else's stuff, as the word is meant elsewhere. In our case that word was used to
refer to what actually are nothing but "fees for service", rather
than "tribute" or "claims of sovereign right".
But because
"tax" DOES mean "tribute" or "sovereign claims"
elsewhere and elsewhen, its unfortunate use here in lieu of a more accurate
term has led to a widespread inability on the part of many Americans to think
clearly about what is meant when the word is used in our laws. Hearing (or
reading) "tax", many Americans have come to think "something the
government is authorized to take from people as it wills, just because it
wills." The fact is, of course, there is no such thing in the American
system, but the persistent use without clarification of the
foreign-baggage-laden term "tax" has distorted understanding of the
term in its American sense, and led many folks to an overall muddled perception
of the nature of government in this country (a problem especially widespread
today, with meaningful "civics" no longer taught in government
schools).
What we DO have in
this country is a varied collection of permissions granted to the federal
government to seek revenue through the agreement or voluntary actions of
others. For instance, the federal government has been given permission to seek
cash injections from the constituent union states (direct taxes, subject to the
rules of under Article 1, section 9). Under these provisions the states agreed
to allow any member of the House of Representatives to move for revenue
injections from the states. If the measure wins sufficient support in both
houses of the legislature, liability for the injections fall on the state
governments, apportioned based on the population of each.
The federal
government has also been given permission to charge for various things citizens
choose to do. For instance, the government can charge fees for bringing goods
into the country across the national border (tariffs), or for the profitable
use or exercise of federal offices, property or prerogatives, the fee for which
is attendant upon, and measured by, gain from the activities ("income"
excises). Permission has been given for the feds to tack fees onto the price of
certain goods sold within its territorial jurisdiction, as well (the purchase
of which, and therefore the payment of the fee, is wholly within the voluntary
choice of the buyer).
The federal
government has NOT been given permission to construct, construe or administer
any fee so as to impose a liability on any citizen (an unapportioned capitation
or other direct fee), such as would be the nature of its revenue measures if they
were what most folks mistake, for instance, the "income tax" to be.
Indeed, it has been expressly prohibited from doing such a thing.
For 150 years (1789
to 1939), the true nature of "tax" in the American system was widely
understood, respected and enforced. Sadly though, because of the persistent
casual use of the term "tax" without acknowledgement of the unique
distinctions of its meaning in America, and crafty and abusive practices by
ever-more creative and unscrupulous tax agencies, over the course of time
understanding faltered and American taxes have come to be seen as impositions
by decree, no different from what the most despotic king has ever levied upon
wholly-owned and subordinated subjects in the darkest of dark ages.
Sadder still, because
of this one misperception, it becomes easy for Americans to misunderstand every
other aspect of the actual legal relationship of government and citizen.
Certainly, if that relationship is such that government can simply reach into
the purse of the citizen on its own call, it is easy to imagine that it somehow
also has the authority to tell people with whom they must trade (or with whom
they cannot); what substances they can ingest and cannot; and on and on (soon
no doubt to include what information they can and cannot read or hear). Habits
of servitude and subordination feed on each other, and once it is admitted that
any particular liberty can be taken by the State, resistance to the next is
weaker.
On the other hand,
spreading understanding among the American public of the real nature of the
American tax structure turns the glass over. Knowledge of the truth nurtures
good habits and restores power to the people, where it is meant to reside.
So teach your
children well, and your friends and neighbors, too. Be clear with your words.
Soon we will find our understanding and clarity of thought refreshed, and will
regain the mastery that can only come by knowing and calling things by their
true names.
“Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be
their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”

The Abuse Syndrome –
learned helplessness in the face of global oppression
You think we live in a
functioning democracy? You think you’re a powerful actor in a sea of democratic
choice? Think again. According to this psychologist we are nations of people
broken by a socialization process that teaches passivity, fear of authority,
and a-social competition, a medical process that applies chemical straitjackets
to the emotional sequelea of oppression, and a psychological establishment that
pathologizes children who refuse to conform.

Credential Inflation-How Reforming Higher Ed With Learner Outcomes Can Damage All Degrees
A few days ago I got linked in a conversation on Rampant Credentialism. Readers frustrated that the degree they had paid good money to obtain didn’t really provide the knowledge or skills anyone seemed to want to pay for. Another reader complained that he had been a craftsman for many years and was now being told he had to get a certificate proving his Competency. He had paid for the program and finished it so he could keep making a living with his experience and skills. But that the coursework of the program itself added nothing. If that certificate was all someone without experience had, it would barely be worth the paper it was written on. Yet it was now required to open the door to future employment. Ensuring a nice stream of income for some credentialing institution. And what if the next degree is just more of the same?
Remember the cliche about the thousand mile journey still requiring that first step? Well the first step in using education as a means for trying to obtain a different utopian tomorrow redesigned around Sustainability and planned and managed through the advances in computer technology needed that first step somewhere. The somewhere has been higher ed. Going on for more than twenty years now. But nobody told the students or parents or taxpayers.
College used to be where you could go and encounter greatness. Great Minds. Great Books. Great Ideas to Build On. And if you weren’t terribly good at negotiating those encounters and felt more shocked than invigorated, you changed your major or muddled along or learned to cultivate different important character traits besides the intellect. The world truly does need all kinds of knowledge and skills. The science nerd capable of invention needs the people person to help her sell it.
We have talked about Outcomes Based Education in the K-12 classroom. Did you know the Regional Accreditors have pushed Learning Outcomes in higher ed? Major by Major? How about new means of measuring progress and activities so that students from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities and genders and races can all obtain degrees and credentials at rates reflecting their percentage of the population? Did you realize that colleges and universities not willing to go along with the Regional Accreditors vision for transforming American education can lose the right to participate in the federal student loan program? Did you realize the vision of education credentials for all is tied to a political vision for a different kind of society and economy that’s not in place yet? And if it ever does occur, we are looking at drastic reductions in economic prosperity for everyone but the politically connected? Does anyone think the typical employee or exec with a Regional Accreditor has any idea what makes an economy grow? Or a recognition from history that degreed, socially reengineered Human Capital without useful knowledge or skills is a path to disaster?
Did you know that other countries pushing Outcomes Based Education in K-12 and higher ed also adopt Qualifications Frameworks to try to force private businesses to accept these credentials? Which means even more regulation and expensive compliance measures from would-be employers? Money that could have gone towards hiring more employees or developing new desired products and services? That Qualifications Frameworks are expensive, controversial, and a quick trip to a dirigiste economy?
This already revised nature of higher ed is integral to the Common Core’s definition of College Ready. Many changes are already in place and more are coming. All assume preparation for a reimagined future. A dangerous act of widespread social engineering largely going on outside the public eye or awareness. Even many insiders know something is changing but not precisely what it is or what is driving it.
With the current use of the term P-20 meaning Preschool through College, Masters, and Doctorate programs based on generic Competency, Common Core is not just about the attitudes, values, emotions, and interpersonal skill shifts we have been talking about now in post after post. No the student’s job is also to keep showing up year after year to obtain needed credentials that enrich everyone tied into what is the 2nd largest industry in the world after retail.
Students exist so that administrators can have well-paying jobs. It’s true in K-12 and it’s especially true on campus. When you reorganize undergraduate education around “Improving Student Engagement, Experience, And Learning Outcomes” or “Learning within a Campus Culture of Diversity,” it takes a great deal of administrative monitoring and meddling to ensure professors do not revert to testing on facts and a body of knowledge. That’s not equally accessible to all students. DING goes the not-to-be permitted gong.
Assessment (one of the listed Big A’s in changing higher ed) for all is to be “multidimensional, integrated, and revealed in performance over time.” That should get more students to the finish line of getting a degree. It may also be propelling us towards a world where that credential leaves its holder unprepared for anything but waiting tables. Even worse, some of those with the paper credentials had the creativity and imagination and skills with abstract ideas and sequential logic that were never cultivated. The policies and practices of Education for All in too much of their K-12 and then higher ed means that potential is lost. We are all poorer when we restrict our best minds to basic nutrition needed by anyone.
I mentioned in the July 16 post that if the Earth was not moving toward critical environmental tipping points, the proposed Common Core education theories and practices were a fast train to economic catastrophe. Transforming P-20 to Learner Outcomes accessible for all is an expensive fast train to economic catastrophe. And this train has already left the station and is picking up speed. The accreditors seem to want to keep an ongoing relationship now instead of periodic ten-year reviews.
So the push for transformative change is now virtually constant. Just what you did not want to hear before you wrote that tuition check or took out that loan. But we need better recognition of what is wrong if there’s to be any chance that next year’s tuition is not to be purchasing an even more manipulated degree program. I don’t think we can rely on Accreditation (the 2nd Big A) to recognize what is wrong with the map they are using to direct the higher ed train. You see, there is no one forcing Accountability (the 3rd Big A to Transformation) on the Accreditors. Nice gig if you qualify.

So Now Common Core
Rejects Individual Thinking to Embrace Soviet Psychology & Ecology?
This week was the
perfect example of why it is important these days to read everything the
federal government publishes touching education. It also serves as a reminder
that the Summary up front never reveals the juicy relevant details we need to
know. This is especially true when the federal government announces that Common
Core is not a Product as in
knowledge American students should know but a Process of learning in “culturally relevant contexts.” It rejected
the traditional view of cognition as “too narrowly focused on individual
thinking and learning” and thereby proved why you really do not want
unaccountable federal officials with all that money and power and lobbyists
wanting a portion of it establishing local education policy.
The report, called
Education for Life and Work and published by the National Research Council,
rejected the cognitive perspective that has all the confirming research
supporting how and why it worked. Instead it embraced the socio-cultural
perspective of learning because it was a theory that met its goal of applying
equally to all students. Wow! Here’s precisely what they said:
“In the socio-cultural perspective, learning takes place as
individuals participate in the practices of a community, using the tools,
language, and other cultural artifacts of the community.”
Just in case you were
wondering precisely how online computer gaming had become classified as
“learning,” there you go. And the push for IPads or SMART phones in class?
Interacting with the everyday technology and each other is now the kind of tool
use and community practices that are to constitute Common Core learning for the
21st century. If you, like me, are struck by the fact that it would be
difficult to come up with a better strategy for creating mindless drones, don’t
worry. There is still the NEA’s Purple America values curriculum and all that
Positive School Climate moral and character curriculum to create a sense of
well-being that we have been talking about.
You really do want to
laugh, don’t you? It seems rather preposterous. But remember that pronouncement
on learning “through social interactions in a community” involves many of the
same agencies and funding entities involved in that Belmont Challenge
restructuring of the US economy and society around sustainability and citizen
wellbeing. We talked about that in the June 14 post on the Belmont Challenge
and the next post on the Future Earth Alliance http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/the-belmont-challenge-and-the-death-of-the-individual-via-education/

Real Change will
Require New Values and New Ways of Thinking or Social Engineering Is Hard

Well I am combining
two different points that aim for the same goal in that title. The latter part
is from a March 2012 article in Scientific American explaining that the future
science initiatives needed to be in “psychology, sociology, economics and
political science” in order to get “species-wide alteration in basic human
behavior.” Well how’s that for ambitious? Wouldn’t a deep seated Common human
Core of shared values and common attitudes grounded in emotion instead of facts
come in handy for such a transformative aspiration? Here’s the premise that all
these education reforms in the US, UK, and Australia we have been talking about
are based on:
“Human societies must
now change course and steer away from critical tipping points in the Earth
system that might lead to rapid and irreversible change. This requires
fundamental reorientation and restructuring of national and international
institutions toward more effective Earth system governance and planetary
stewardship.”

Learning to Learn or
How to Replace Old Minds with Sustainable New Ones
Posted on July 18,
2012
I know you are
thinking no one would really say that but they did. In fact the book we talked
about in our last post Management for A
Small Planet even has a chapter called “We Are How We Think” that quotes a
1989 book by Population and Environmental alarmist Paul Ehrlich. Ehrlich wrote
“there is now a mismatch between the human mind and the world people inhabit”.
To properly deal with the environmental threats he saw everywhere, people “need
to replace our old minds with new ones.” How? By changing the learning process
itself. Now before I explain how in ways that will build on things like the
SEL, values, communitarian ethos, and higher order thinking we have been
talking about, I want to talk about Ehrlich’s dispute and bet with economist
Julian Simon over the future. And whether to be optimistic or pessimistic.
Now I am not going to
explain the wager itself. It is too easy to search the phrase “simon ehrlich
wager” and get the details. It is Simon’s vision of humanity and education and
the economy I first want to talk about. His vision reflects what most of us
think we are getting when we pay property taxes to fund schools or write that
tuition check or take out a student loan. If our education spending is based on
obtaining Simon’s vision for the future but we are unwittingly buying Ehrlich’s
desire for reframed new minds instead, I think it is past time we recognize
that difference. Especially if Common Core and the related reforms of higher ed
are about to really impose the Ehrlich/Small Planet mental vision.
In 1981 Julian Simon
wrote a book The Ultimate Resource that rebutted all the doom and gloom about
the scarcity of energy and natural resources and the “perils of overpopulation”
that people like Ehrlich or groups like the Club of Rome had been pushing
throughout the 1970s. Simon argued that it is the human mind that has made
natural resources of value in the first place. He believed and argued
persuasively that the ultimate resource on Planet Earth is the human imagination
of creative, knowledgeable people when combined with a determined human spirit.
That combination is what literally creates civilizations. At least it can when
it is combined with a political-social-economic system that provides personal
freedom from government coercion.
What Simon points out
(pages 11 -13) in the 1996 reissue called The Ultimate Resource 2 is that if
you look everywhere in the world where widespread prosperity and human progress
has ever appeared you find important commonalities in the story:
“Skilled persons require a framework that provides incentives
for working hard and taking risks, enabling their talents to flower and come to
fruition. The key elements of such a framework are economic liberty, respect
for property, and fair and sensible rules of the market that are enforced
equally for all.”
Now Simon’s
definition of “skilled” is not the generic 21st century skills designed to be
accessible to anyone drawing a breath. He meant education that actually
increases the “stock of useful knowledge,” not paper credentalling for all in
the name of social justice. As Simon says (I couldn’t help myself but this
really is not a child’s game): “minds matter economically as much as, or more
than, hands or mouths.” Now here is the critical point where Julian Simon is
precisely right but it is diametrically opposed to the Sustainability vision of
the future economy:
“The essence of
wealth is the capacity to control the forces of nature, and the extent of
wealth depends upon the level of technology and the ability to create new
knowledge.”
That is the opposite
of the Small Planet/Sustainability/UNESCO vision of the future. That new
knowledge is created from a solid foundation of the transmitted knowledge of
the Ages that the Common Core and OBE and the UN’s Education For All generally
refuse to allow. With the regional accreditors on board to act as enforcers for
this Ehrlich/Small Planet quest for new minds.
So Simon won the
wager and Ehrlich paid him. But Ehrlich’s economic and environmental vision is
what has been and is being unwittingly adopted globally through Outcomes Based
Education grounded in authentic learning and emotionally engaging pedagogies
and ecological/cultural approaches to curriculum. A classic example of winning
the battle and losing the war. And mostly out of sight as taxpayers believe
they are getting consistent content requirements state to state in case they
ever need to move. Other countries got similar Bait and Switch programs. The
solution to the created problem in education ends up being a more extreme
version of what created the problem initially.
Authentic learning
(ATLAS) came to Australia officially about 2001. In the US it is a part of the
Common Core implementation. The idea is to “investigate real-world topics and solve
real-world problems.” Students are to “demonstrate their understanding by
applying what they have learned to new and challenging situations.” Ehrlich’s
new minds (he has plenty of company from our previous posts) then are supposed
to come about through double-loop learning processes. Yes that really is
italicized just like that on page 95 of Small Planet just after the new minds
quote. I have a feeling all that data and feedback we keep hearing about will
be very helpful to this aim of altering mental frameworks.
So basically you take
those authentic, challenging real-world topics and complex, largely insoluble,
social problems and have the students reflect and inquire. Teachers and other students examine the
underlying assumptions, values, experiences, and social norms that frame each
student’s expressed beliefs. The double-loop aspect focuses on the systems
structures that supposedly “address the underlying causes of behavior.”
And that fundamental
personal reexamination process and inquiry into a real world that the student
is unlikely to have much factual knowledge about (content no longer being the
main point of school) is officially called “learning to learn.” And it is
regarded as a terrific foundation for modifying how people think. To get them
to see the world in terms of dynamic interrelationships.
And only in terms of
their own physical interactions and experiences and emotions. How politically
useful but so mentally confining. Makes you want to rebel and go read a book
just for spite.

Thomas Pynchon
(b. 1937)
1963 V. Pynchon's first novel introduces readers to the
writer's complex encyclopedic style, absurdist comedy, and penchant for paranoia.
It takes the form of a quest for an elusive figure who is in turns a woman, a
construction, and a force across major portions of nineteenth- and
twentieth-century history. It has been described as a black comic odyssey into
the bizarre anxieties of the modern world. Born on Long Island, New York,
Pynchon served in the navy and graduated from Cornell, where one of his
professors was Vladimir Nabokov.
1966 The Crying of Lot 49. Pynchon's second novel concerns
Oedipa Maas's search to uncover a vast underground conspiracy. Pynchon's
shortest and most accessible novel would be later dismissed by its author as a
"story... which was marketed as a 'novel,' and in which I seem to have
forgotten most of what I thought I'd learned up till then." Critics have
generally disagreed, finding in the work most of Pynchon's major themes.
1973 Gravity's Rainbow. Set during the waning days of World War
II, the encyclopedic novel leads readers through plot and stylistic twists so
labyrinthine that reality can no longer be differentiated from extravagant
fantasy. The book becomes one of the most widely discussed of its day and wins
the National Book Award. Pynchon's masterwork has prompted comparisons with
James Joyce's Ulysses and other
modernist classics.
1984 Slow Learner. Breaking a long silence since the
publication of Gravity's Rainbow
(1973), Pynchon collects his early short stories and provides in an
introduction the fullest self-revelations available about his works.
1990 Vineland. Pynchon's novel juxtaposes the declining
radicalism of the 1960s with the leftism of the 1930s and nineteenth-century
progressivism. Unassimilated hippies Zoyd Wheeler, his wife, and their
daughter, Prairie, are the focus of the plot, which deals with FBI agents, the
ubiquitous mind control of television, and in general, the modern tendency for
bureaucracy to stifle individuality. Like Pynchon's other fiction, this novel
explores a broad social canvas with eccentric characters and a dominant strain
of paranoia.
1997 Mason & Dixon. Pynchon's long-anticipated "big
book" is a picaresque pastiche of the eighteenth-century novel, following
British surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon as they establish the
boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland (and much else).

Number ONE Enemy of the
State
There is immense
confusion about the nature of the State. There is even more bewilderment about
what constitutes a patriot. Any discussion in the civic realm begins with a
cultural viewpoint. An attitude toward the proper role of the individual’s
relationship with government based upon one’s value system and interpretation
of civil order is natural. One man’s patriot is another man’s traitor. Where do
you stand on the sentiments behind the penning of the below ideas? Quiz
yourself and see if you can figure out the name of the author.
The quotes assembled
in this essay illustrate that government officials and agencies would put the
critic on a terrorist watch list. Read each and compare if the thought behind
the passage agrees with your value system or if the attitude is too extreme for
mainstream politics in today’s America. If left up to the national security
apparatus, the author would be on a wanted poster, labeled as the Number One
Enemy of the State.
Lincoln’s Monetary
Policy
from Senate Document
No. 23
National Economy
and the
Banking System of the
United States
Presented by: Mr.
Logan, January 24, 1939.
Money is the creature
of law and the creation of the original issue of money should be maintained as
an exclusive monopoly of National Government.
Money possesses no
value to the State other than given to it by circulation. Capital has its
proper place and is entitled to every protection. The wages of men should be
recognized in the structure of government and in the social order as more important
than the wages of money.
No duty is more
imperative on the Government than the duty it owes the people to furnish them
with a sound and uniform currency, and of regulating the circulation of the
medium of exchange so that labor will be protected from a vicious currency, and
commerce will be facilitated by cheap and safe exchanges.
The available supply
of gold and silver being wholly inadequate to permit the issuance of coins of
intrinsic value or paper currency convertible into coin in the volume required
to serve the needs of the people, some other basis for the issue of currency
must be developed, and some means other than that of convertibility into coin
must be developed to prevent undue fluctuations in the value of paper currency
or any other substitute for money of intrinsic value that may come into use.
The monetary needs of increasing numbers of people advancing toward higher
standards of living can and should be met by the Government. Such needs can be
served by the issue of national currency and credit through the operation of a
national banking system. The circulation of a medium of exchange issued and
backed by the Government can be properly regulated and redundancy of issue
avoided by withdrawing from circulation such amounts as may be necessary by
taxation, redeposit, and otherwise.1 Government has the power to regulate the
currency and credit of the nation.
Government should
stand behind its currency and credit and the bank deposits of the Nation. No
individual should suffer a loss of money through depreciated or inflated
currency or bank bankruptcy.
Government possessing
the power to create and issue currency and credit as money and enjoying the
right to withdraw both currency and credit from circulation by taxation and
otherwise, need not and should not 2 borrow capital at interest as the means of
financing governmental work and public enterprise.
The Government should
create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credit needed to satisfy the
spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers.
The privilege of
creating and issuing money is not only the supreme prerogative of Government,
but it is the Government’s greatest creative opportunity.
By adoption of these
principles, the long-felt want for a uniform medium will be satisfied.
The taxpayers will be
saved immense sums in interest, discounts, and exchanges.
The financing of all
public enterprise, the maintenance of stable government and ordered process,
and the conduct of the Treasury will become matters of practical
administration. The people can and will be furnished with a currency as safe as
their own Government.
Money will cease to be
master and
become the servant of
humanity.
Democracy will rise
superior
to the money power.
Transhumanist religion
2.0
Cosmism, an
emerging “religion 2.0” that is part of a radical futurist conception of the
future development of humanity, can give us the positive optimism and
“strenuous mood” to overcome our current problems and embark on our cosmic
journey.
So say contemporary
cosmists, who believe that the “manifest destiny” of our species is colonizing
the universe and developing spacetime engineering and scientific “future magic”
much beyond our current understanding and imagination.
These ideas were
first developed in the late 19th century by Russian Cosmism, the scientific
philosophy of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and Nikolai Fedorov, who considered
science as a tool given to us by God to enable us to resurrect the dead and, as
promised, enjoy immortal life.
Some cosmists —
including me — expect that God-like beings will exist in the future, and they
may be able to affect their past — our present — by means of spacetime
engineering. Probably other civilizations out there have already attained
God-like powers.
“It’s at least
conceivable that remarkably advanced technology of the future may allow
positive answers — that our descendants will have the god-like ability to
recreate us in the future, giving us an unexpected prospect for immortality,”
says David Wood in Super-technology and a possible renaissance of religion.
Future magic will
permit achieving, by scientific means, most of the promises of religions — and
many amazing things that no human religion ever dreamed of. Future God-like
beings could resurrect the dead by “copying them to the future.” Perhaps we
will be resurrected in virtual reality — and perhaps we are already there.
I have written a lot
about these convictions, without calling them “beliefs.” But, following William
James, since I am persuaded that these convictions are scientifically
plausible, and they give me happiness and drive, I choose to hold them as
beliefs.
On Saturday, July 14,
2012, in London, Prisco will give a talk on Turing Church unlimited – Transhumanist

What’s a Name?
Becoming a Lloyd’s
insurance underwriter, or a “Name”, was until the later part of the twentieth
century, only open to a select few. To become a Name, one had to be proposed
for membership by another name. The assets and social connections required to
join Lloyds made it an exclusive social club, which yielded the sort of
dividends that the British upper class felt entitled to by birth. There was, of
course, a certain amount of risk, but unlucky investors were encouraged to pay
up quietly — “Oh, bad luck old boy, wrong syndicate”. Being a Lloyd’s Name
became a sign of both social and financial achievement.
If someone asks you what is your
name, he is asking for your insurance underwriter.

Scenarios for the
Future of Technology and International Development
Imagining the Future
There is little doubt
that technology will continue to drive change across the developing world.
However, uncertainty exists about the role of technological advances in
alleviating poverty. To uncover the range of possibilities that may emerge,
novel approaches like scenario planning are essential.
“Scenarios for the
Future of Technology and International Development,” a new report, features
four very different—yet very plausible—visions of how technology could
profoundly alter how we address some of the most pressing challenges in the
developing world.
Scenario planning—an
innovative method of creating narratives about the future—is a powerful tool
for assisting organizations in considering how complex problems could evolve
and be solved over the long term. The scenario planning process helps to identify
unique opportunities, rehearse important decisions by simulating their broader
implications, and illuminate previously unexplored areas of intersection.

Despite having reported the discovery

Even Matt Drudge, when presented with

opting instead for a story accusing Sidney Blumenthal of domestic violence (for
which Drudge was then sued).
Five Hundred Years of
Injustice:
The Legacy of Fifteenth
Century Religious Prejudice
By Steve Newcomb
When Christopher
Columbus first set foot on the white sands of Guanahani island, he performed a
ceremony to "take possession" of the land for the king and queen of
Spain, acting under the international laws of Western Christendom. Although the
story of Columbus' "discovery" has taken on mythological proportions
in most of the Western world, few people are aware that his act of
"possession" was based on a religious doctrine now known in history
as the Doctrine of Discovery. Even fewer people realize that today - five
centuries later - the United States government still uses this archaic
Judeo-Christian doctrine to deny the rights of Native American Indians.
Origins of the Doctrine
of Discovery
To understand the connection
between Christendom's principle of discovery and the laws of the United States,
we need to begin by examining a papal document issued forty years before
Columbus' historic voyage In 1452, Pope Nicholas V issued to King Alfonso V of
Portugal the bull Romanus Pontifex, declaring war against all non-Christians
throughout the world, and specifically sanctioning and promoting the conquest,
colonization, and exploitation of non-Christian nations and their territories.
Under various
theological and legal doctrines formulated during and after the Crusades,
non-Christians were considered enemies of the Catholic faith and, as such, less
than human. Accordingly, in the bull of 1452, Pope Nicholas directed King
Alfonso to "capture, vanquish, and subdue the saracens, pagans, and other
enemies of Christ," to "put them into perpetual slavery," and
"to take all their possessions and property." [Davenport: 20-26]
Acting on this papal privilege, Portugal continued to traffic in African slaves,
and expanded its royal dominions by making "discoveries" along the
western coast of Africa, claiming those lands as Portuguese territory.
Thus, when Columbus
sailed west across the Sea of Darkness in 1492 - with the express understanding
that he was authorized to "take possession" of any lands he
"discovered" that were "not under the dominion of any Christian
rulers" - he and the Spanish sovereigns of Aragon and Castile were
following an already well-established tradition of "discovery" and
conquest. [Thacher: 96] Indeed, after Columbus returned to Europe, Pope
Alexander VI issued a papal document, the bull Inter Cetera of May 3, 1493,
"granting" to Spain - at the request of Ferdinand and Isabella - the
right to conquer the lands which Columbus had already found, as well as any lands
which Spain might "discover" in the future.
In the Inter Cetera
document, Pope Alexander stated his desire that the "discovered"
people be "subjugated and brought to the faith itself." [Davenport:
61] By this means, said the pope, the "Christian Empire" would be
propagated. [Thacher: 127] When Portugal protested this concession to Spain,
Pope Alexander stipulated in a subsequent bull - issued May 4, 1493 - that
Spain must not attempt to establish its dominion over lands which had already
"come into the possession of any Christian lords." [Davenport: 68]
Then, to placate the two rival monarchs, the pope drew a line of demarcation
between the two poles, giving Spain rights of conquest and dominion over one
side of the globe, and Portugal over the other.
During this
quincentennial of Columbus' journey to the Americas, it is important to
recognize that the grim acts of genocide and conquest committed by Columbus and
his men against the peaceful Native people of the Caribbean were sanctioned by
the abovementioned documents of the Catholic Church. Indeed, these papal
documents were frequently used by Christian European conquerors in the Americas
to justify an incredibly brutal system of colonization - which dehumanized the
indigenous people by regarding their territories as being "inhabited only
by brute animals." [Story: 135-6]
The lesson to be
learned is that the papal bulls of 1452 and 1493 are but two clear examples of
how the "Christian Powers," or "different States of
Christendom," viewed indigenous peoples as "the lawful spoil and prey
of their civilized conquerors." [Wheaton: 270-1] In fact, the Christian
"Law of Nations" asserted that Christian nations had a divine right,
based on the Bible, to claim absolute title to and ultimate authority over any
newly "discovered" Non-Christian inhabitants and their lands. Over
the next several centuries, these beliefs gave rise to the Doctrine of
Discovery used by Spain, Portugal, England, France, and Holland - all Christian
nations.

village of Maunby. The family of Mauteby had a considerable interest in this
place so early as the tenth year of Richard I., and continued here till 1481,
when they were succeeded by the Pastons. "At the east end of the church
against the south wall lies a curious antique monument; a stone coffin, about a
foot and a half deep, resting on the pavement, and about seven feet in length;
on the lid, or cover, the whole being of grey marble, are the effigies of a
Knight Templar, cross-legged, in armour, in full proportion, his sword in a
broad belt hanging over his shoulder, in memory of a knight of the family of De
Mauteby, and living, as the monument bespeaks, about the year 1250." The
south aisle of this church, where many of the Mautebys were buried, has fallen
to ruins; it had been rebuilt by Margaret Paston, the heiress of the family,
who was also interred here. At the distance of 20 miles from Norwich we now
arrive at Caistor, next Yarmouth. In the celebrated Notitia Imperii, or survey
of the Roman empire, published by Pancirollus in 1593, it appears that the
Roman commander of the Stablesian horse, under the Count of the Saxon shore,.in
Britain, was stationed at a place called Garianonum, or the mouth of the
Gariensis or Yare; but where that ancient fortress was situated authors are not
exactly agreed. Camden places it at Burgh Castle, in Suffolk, and says that
Yarmouth rose out of. its ruins. Sir Henry Spelman places it at Cais H tor.
There is no doubt that the Romans at different times occupied both these
places, as each port became more or less navigable. It is certain that an arm
of the sea, which formerly overflowed the marshes between Yarmouth and Norwich,
must nearly have reached Burgh Castle, and...

Development
By Oliver E.
Williamson
(1993)
In 1937, Ronald H.
Coase published "The Nature of the Firm," a classic paper that raised
fundamental questions about the concept of the firm in economic theory. Coase
proposed that the comparative costs of organizing transactions through markets
rather than within firms are the primary determinants of the size and scope of
firms. Coase won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Economics for this work. This volume
derives from a conference held in 1987 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary
of the publication of Coase's classic article. The first chapter affords an
overview of the volume. It is followed by a republication of the 1937 article,
and by the three lectures Coase presented at the conference. These lectures
provide a lively and informative history of the origins and development of his
thought. Subsequent chapters explore a wide-range of theoretical and empirical
issues that have arisen in the transaction cost economic tradition. They
illustrate the power of the transaction cost approach to enhance understanding
not only of business firms, but of problems of economic organization generally.
In addition to Coase's work, contributors include Sherwin Rosen, Paul Joskow,
Oliver Hart, Harold Demsetz, Scott Masten, Benjamin Klein, as well as the
volume's editors, Oliver E. Williamson, and Sidney G. Winter. The Nature of the
Firmincludes Coase's acceptance speech for his Nobel Prize in Economics.
Cognitive Infiltration
An Obama Appointee's Plan to Undermine the
9/11 Conspiracy Theory
By David Ray Griffin
(2010)
Griffin's meritorious effort to raise public awareness and
understanding
Former Chicago and
Harvard law professor Cass Sunstein, who in 2009 was appointed by President
Barack Obama to direct an important executive branch office, had in 2008
co-authored an article containing a plan for the government to prevent the
spread of anti-government "conspiracy theories." Arguing that such
theories are believed only by groups suffering from "informational
isolation," he advocated the use of anonymous government agents to engage
in "cognitive infiltration" of these groups in order to introduce
"cognitive diversity," with the aim of breaking them up.
Noting that
Sunstein's proposal has evoked condemnations from across the political
spectrum--not least because it, being similar to the FBI's COINTELPRO of the
1960s, would be illegal--David Ray Griffin focuses on the fact that Sunstein's
primary target is the conspiracy theory advocated by the 9/11 Truth Movement.
Examining Sunstein's charge that this theory is both "harmful" and
"demonstrably false," Griffin uses both satire and overwhelming
evidence to show that this twofold charge applies instead to what Sunstein
calls "the true conspiracy theory" about 9/11-namely, the
"theory that Al-Qaeda was responsible for 9/11."
“You will be shocked that these types of things are being
openly considered by our government and wonder if our Country, America, still
even exists.”

The Jewish Question: A
Marxist Interpretation
A MARXIST
INTERPRETATION
By Abram Leon
(1971)
Traces the historical
rationalizations of anti-Semitism to the fact that, in the centuries preceding
the domination of industrial capitalism, Jews emerged as a
"people-class" of merchants, moneylenders, and traders. Leon explains
why the propertied rulers incite renewed Jew-hatred in the epoch of
capitalism's decline.

The Stargate Chronicles
By Joseph McMoneagle
(2002)
Joseph McMoneagle is
now known as the best Operational Remote Viewer in the history of the U.S.
Army's Special Project--Stargate. He was the only Remote Viewer who worked
one-on-one with the out-of-body pioneer Robert Monroe, and who has achieved
intelligence collection results that have never been surpassed and rarely
equaled. Among his achievements:
He described the
interior of a top secret Soviet manufacturing plant and accurately predicted a
new class of ship under construction--the previously unknown Typhoon Class
submarine.
He sketched the
location and described the thoughts and reactions of an American kidnap victim
held by the Red Brigade in Northern Italy--U.S. Army General Dozier.
He accurately predicted
when Skylab would leave orbit and where it would impact on the Earth's
surface--eleven months prior to the actual event.
After conventional
reconnaissance failed, he and others were able to locate a downed Soviet bomber
that had been carrying nuclear materials.
He achieved these
results using scientifically designed and tested double-blind protocols. And in
the years since his retirement he has continued to demonstrate these abilities
on camera for national television in three countries. Yet he is still
confronted with what he calls the "giggle factor"--the automatic
response of many, including some who know better--to ridicule anything
connected with "psychic stuff." Surprisingly, it was always that way,
even during his Army years.
Was it his largely
unsuspected psychic ability that helped keep him alive in Vietnam, and aided in
his invaluable contributions to the cold war effort, that made McMoneagle a
first-class remote viewer? Were his abilities a natural gift, or taught? How
much did he owe to his near-death experience in the 1970s? And why would he
give up a safe and distinguished career as an advisor to the Commanding General
of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command to become Remote Viewer 001?
This is his story.

Did Tesla Reincarnate
as Patrick Flanagan?
I consider Gillis
Patrick Flanagan to be the most likely candidate for the reincarnation of
Tesla, born a little over a year after Tesla died, with full recollection of
his previous life, building a Tesla coil at 8, and literally shocking the
neighborhood at 9.5 years of age with his 14 MHz coil that created 6-foot arcs.

All terror trauma comes from one
source
THE PHILOSOPHY THAT NOW
RULES THE WORLD
featuring
Rabbi Kook the Elder,
Menachem Schneerson, Morris Fishbein and Larry Silverstein
Members of Gush Emunum
argue that 'what appears to be confiscation of Arab-owned land for subsequent
settlement by Jews is in reality not an act of stealing but one of
sanctification.'
By John Kaminski
Every day from every
angle, a new terror threat, or an update on yesterday's terror threat, or the
one from the day before that.
The past decade has
been an unfolding, preplanned series of false flag terror spectaculars that
have resulted in fabricated reasons to go to war, sexual molestations at
airports, and a total departure from the principles upon which the USA was
founded.
But for the
deliberately twisted information provided to everyone by a world media
apparatus owned by the same people complicit in these false flag terror crimes,
people throughout the last century absolutely did not know the horrors and
injustices that were perpetrated in their names, nor the contrived reasons for
their happening at all.
This is no longer the
case.
From the hundreds of
millions dead in the world wars to the hundreds of millions about to die from
the ravages of radiation, the reason for all of these colossal crimes can be
traced to the same source.
"Rabbi Kook the
Elder, the revered father of the messianic tendency in Jewish fundamentalism,
said, 'The difference between a Jewish soul and the souls of non-Jews—all of
them in all different levels—is greater and deeper than the difference between
a human soul and the souls of cattle.'
Rabbi Kook's entire
teaching... is followed devoutly by, among others, those who have led the
settler movement in the occupied West Bank... According to the ideologies which
underlie Gush Emunum, the militant West Bank settlers group, and Hasidism,
non-Jews have 'satanic souls'... Members of Gush Emunum argue that 'what
appears to be confiscation of Arab-owned land for subsequent settlement by Jews
is in reality not an act of stealing but one of sanctification.'
From their
perspective the land is redeemed by being transferred from the satanic to the
divine sphere... Common to both the Talmud and the Halacha, Orthodox religious
law, is a differentiation between Jews and non-Jews.
The highly revered
Rabbi Menachem Mandel Schneerson, who headed the Chabad movement and wielded
great influence in Israel as well [and proclaimed himself messiah], explained
that 'The difference between a Jewish and a non-Jewish person stems from the
common expression: 'Let us differentiate.' Thus, we do not have a case of
profound change in which a person is merely on a superior level. Rather we have
a case of 'let us differentiate' between totally different species. This is
what needs to be said about the body: the body of a Jewish person is of a
totally different quality from the body of all nations of the world.'"

Schneerson taught that Christianity is a form of mental illness.

Instructions on how to
twist evil into good
Morris Fishbein went
to work at the American Medical Association in 1913 and stayed until they
kicked him out in 1949. What he did in that time was remove from the AMA any
thought of providing public health that would interfere with maximum profits, a
philosophy that rules this organization of doctors to this day.
The famous AMA seal
of approval was known as 'green medicine' by those in the know who knew that
bribing Fishbein was the only way to get their products and services to market,
a principal reason why the health of all Americans has declined precipitously
throughout the last century, according to Eustace Mullins in his famous book,
which is encapsulated in the video:
EUSTACE MULLINS: MURDER
BY INJECTION
Larry Silverstein
used to chat on the phone almost every day with his close friend, current
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Silverstein recently made $4 billion
on a $300 million bet when insurance companies coughed up the payout on his
insurance policies on the Twin Towers.
This was his pay for
engineering the creation of policy that blamed Muslims for a terrible crime
that was actually committed by those in the employ of the Jewish moneymasters
who rule the world, and who are so ably represented by an endless army of paid
stooges who pose as our presidents and other elected officials, all bowing to
the money king Netanyahu when he came to bless our Congress with his
six-pointed death star.
